Hydrogen Combustion Engine

Most automotive companies are investing heavily in battery-electric vehicles and perceive this as the future of cars.

However, with the discovery of the many negative effects of electric batteries, Toyota is now focussing on developing an engine that runs on an alternative energy source, hydrogen.

The prototype internal combustion engine pictured above produces 455 horsepower at 6,800 and 398 lb-ft torque at 3,600 rpm. A technical team representative, Takeshi Yamada, told the press that liquified hydrogen has great performance potential and is eco-friendly.

It’s a 5.0-litre engine that was initially fitted in the Lexus RC F. Yamaha was contracted to modify the engine to produce energy by combusting liquified hydrogen.

Some modified components include the injectors, over-the-cylinder heads, and intake manifolds. The main goal of this project is to provide hybrid cars that run on a carbon-neutral fuel and reduce over-reliance on battery-electric vehicles.

This new development and the zeal to develop an eco-friendly internal combustion engine is proof of the commitment to making all its manufacturing facilities carbon-neutral by 2035.

Ammonia Combustion Engine

Seems like Toyota is not yet ready to do away with internal combustion engines completely. During GAC Tech Day 2023, GAC, a Chinese automaker manufacturer, announced its partnership with the company to develop a new combustion engine that will run on ammonia.

Before this announcement, there were reports that Toyota was experimenting with hydrogen-fueled engines in motorsports models, the Toyota Corolla and the Prius.

One of the highlights of this new engine is that it doesn’t have fuel cells. The engine powers the car by combusting ammonia instead of gas.

The 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine developed by GAC produces 161 horsepower and reduces carbon emissions by up to 90%. This capability makes it more planet-friendly than the conventional 2.0-liter gasoline engine.

One of the GAC R&D engineers stated, “We’ve overcome the pain point of ammonia being difficult to burn quickly and put the fuel to use in the passenger car industry.”

It’s also important to note that compared to gasoline, ammonia has half the energy density and doesn’t emit CO2 or carbon when combusted. The success of this project so far could result in the introduction of ammonia engines in the auto industry.
